Urban Meyer Steps Down as Head Coach at the University of Florida Due to Health ConcernsSat, 12/26/2009 - 7:18pm — Rusty Urban Meyer announced earlier today that he will step down from his "dream job" as head coach of the University of Florida. He will coach the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on January 1st, 2010; but will hand over the reigns thereafter. Although much speculation surrounded Meyer regarding the Notre Dame job and possible NFL jobs, this has nothing to do with any of the conspiracy theories that may surround this suprising news. Meyer's home will remain in Gainesville and he will probably help Florida's Atheltic Director Jeremy Foley choose his successor as head coach. Since becoming Florida's head coach, Meyer has fallen in love with Gainesville and has expressed his desire to remain in Gainesville as long as we will have him and until his kids graduate. With Nate Meyer not even in high school, he looks to remain in Gainesville for a long time. Urban Meyer has had health issues due to stress since he was a coach at Bowling Green that have included, but not been limited to; throwing up on the sideline, headaches, dehydration, and high blood pressure. After the SEC Championship against Alabama, Coach Meyer was taken to the hospital for dehydration and chest pains, but was treated there and released that same afternoon. Other health issues include an arachnoid cyst on his brain that was discovered in 1998. Doctors told him then it was not life threatening, but he could suffer head pain if the stress caused the condition to flare up. Rumors have surrounded Gainesville that Meyer has been suffering from headaches for the past couple weeks, but haven't been medically confirmed. The breaking news may be the confirmation we've all been looking for. Here's the statement Coach Meyer released today:
Here's what Jeremy Foley released regarding the news:
Meyer has won 3 SEC Eastern Division Championships, 2 SEC Championships, 2 BCS Championships in his tenure at Florida. Meyer also went 14-1 against Florida's rivals (Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida State) in his five years as head coach. Meyer steps down as one of the best in the game at coaching, recruiting, and managing a team and leaves a void that Foley will struggle to fill. The decision he made was honorable and shows where his true passion is; his family. Thanks for the memories, Coach Meyer. We look forward to having you in Gainesville and around the University of Florida for years to come. Rusty Thompson is one of the founders of GatorTailgating.com

Meyer has done well at
Meyer has done well at Florida. His timing was just right. If he's had so many health problems, that must be difficult. Could be his physical make-up doesn't match his desire for high levels of competition.
I wish him well! After all it's just a game. Not worth losing your life for. His stress would definitely be multiplied over the next few years as well. Sounds like he needs to hit the golf course.
Good luck Coach Meyer, we all wish you the best!
His timing? Voluvr you need to look up who Ron Zook was. He was the coach the last time the vols beat Fla. or when Kentucky did for that matter, he was terrible. Coach Meyer came after him, cleaned up, recruited well and won a bunch.
I am sorry, perhaps you are sincere. I after all hated the way they ran Coach Bowden unceremoniously out of Tallahassee. He was legend. Still cant help but think your a bit happy to see him go. If you are from the south, you know well n good Football is far more than a Game.

I truthfully wanted him to
I truthfully wanted him to stay. With UF losing about 11 or 12 starters, a couple coaches, and Tebow, it would have been interesting to see what kind of coach he would be without the top players.
Zook wasn't all bad. At least he was able to win in Tallahassee as Spurrier never did. That was great for him.
One of the biggest hits to Meyer was Eddie Gran leaving Tennessee and going to FSU. He was almost solely responsible for picking Meyer's pocket in south Florida on several occassions. It's pretty clear UF has benefitted from UM and FSU not being at the top of their game for over a decade. That gives UF first pick in recruits in Fla. That's all changing now.
Earlier in his career he was quoted as saying that ND would be his dream job. In your article, if you wrote that one, YOU stated UF was his dream job. Definitely a good one, but at 45 there must be some serious health issues plaguing Meyer. Otherwise, it would look like he's almost running from the Lane Train. Surely not.
Football is just a game when it gets down to life and death. If he can't handle the stress and pressure of the game, he does need to get out of it.
You have to laugh at the
You have to laugh at the revisionist history of his "dream job", when everyone knows meyer said Notre Dame was his "dream job". What a gut punch for the gator program. The off. cord. left last season, def. cord. and a position coach this year and now meyer quits. What a way to end the year!
I wrote the article, and
I wrote the article, and after he stated that Notre Dame was his dream job, he came out and said that he had the job of his dreams and wouldn't leave Gainesville until they ran him out of town. Obviously, he didn't foresee health issues like these.
Volluvr - I appreciate your tasteful post and you are exactly correct. Football is just a game when it comes down to life, death, and family. I know what GatorMike means by saying football is more than just a game in the south, and that is true as well. Football is taken way more seriously in the south than most other places, but when it comes down to heart failure and possibly not being alive to see your children graduate and get married, it is exactly that: just a game.
Gaytorssux - I cant even honor your idiotic post with a response you classless douche bag. You're Gator Bait and always have been...no matter who your REAL team is that you're ashamed of.
"Gator born, Gator bred, and when I die I'll be Gator dead"
So very well put Rusty.
So very well put Rusty. Volluvr I am flattered, however I have never written any article in here. You clearly have me confused with a much bigger and better Gator than I, thanks though.
The Lane Train, Oh my God, bile in my mouth, Lane train
That is my favorite yet!!! That is so cute. You really belive the hype he is putting out. Drink that cool-aid volluvr, drink it down every drop. Even if Meyer goes, I doubt anybody here would be jelous of your coach, or concerned.
I guess you need something to believe in, maybe he can stop the bleeding, a bit, in this, 6 wins out of 20 games run that it has been. Lane Train LMFAO!!!
