Top 5 Moments in Recent Gator Football HistoryTue, 06/09/2009 - 8:53am — Rusty
Due to it being offseason and missing football so much, I thought it might be fun to relive some of the more recent great moments in Gator football history...thanks to youtube. Enjoy and feel free to add your agreements/disagreements to the comments section below.
5. Earl Everett sacks OSU's Troy Smith in '06 BCS Championship Ohio State came into this game pre-named the 2006 National Champions, thanks to ESPN Herbstreit and Corso. All they had to do was beat the lowly Gators who had no chance at defending Troy Smith and the great Ohia State offense, much less scoring on their stout Big Ten defense. The opening play seemed to open the flood gates and prove the sportscasters right as they scored on the opening kickoff. From there out, it was all Gators though. The Gators answered with a Leak to Baker touchdown, but the defensive ends were the MVPs of the game. They were all over Troy Smith all night. This is the play that really pumped up the defense as the Bucks realized nothing would stop the Gators from coming after their hiesman-winning quarterback.
4. Doug Johnson to Jacquez Green to know FSU out of Championship game in '97 The game was all over but the celebrating. FSU had come into the Swamp as heavily favored as ever in the 90s, and had escaped with a close victory....os so they thought. Spurrier had been unable to find the replacement for Wuerffel in '97 and had been switching between Jesse Palmer, Noah Brindise, and Doug Johnson. None of them performed to his expectations though and the Gators were finishing up a dissappointing season. Instead of choosing a starter, Spurrier chose to switch between two quarterbacks every couple downs and it worked to perfection. The Gators scored on the vaunted Seminole defense unlike any other team before them that season. Unfortunately, the Gators were still behind in the 4th quarter following a Janikowski field goal to make the score 29-25 with 2 minutes remaining in the game. That is where the video picks up....
3. Tie: Ahmad Black's INT / Tebow's jump pass to David Nelson against Oklahoma in '08 The Gators needed a stop and needed it bad. Oklahoma was marching toward the Gators end zone and would take the lead with a touchdown. The Gators were holding on with everything they had to a 3-point lead when Ahmad Black made a huge play.
After that, the Gators needed a score to put the game away. In the red zone, Tebow and Nelson made the neccessary play to secure the 2008 BCS National Championship.
2. Danny Wuerffell to Ike Hilliard in the Sugar Bowl vs. FSU in 1997 The Seminoles had ruined the Gators undefeated season with a 24-21 vicotry at Doak Campbell Stadium. The late-hit fiasco had been the headlines in the 5 weeks between the two games, and the Gators wanted revenge. The only problem was, revenge wouldn't get them a rematch or a national chmpionship. They needed help, and they got it. The Texas Longhorns defeated Nebraska to secure the rematch and Ohio State had defeated Arizone State in the Rose Bowl to secure the victor would be the National Champion. Now, the Gators had their chance for revenge and their first-ever National Championship. Instead of keeping Danny under center, Spurrier went against his usual bias and put him in the shotgun to give him the extra time he needed to complete his passes. It worked to perfection. The Gators went on to defeat FSU 52-20 and this was the most memorable play of the night.
1. Jarvis Moss' field goal block against South Carolina in '06 Spurrier had done it again. In Meyer's first year, he and his gamecocks had surprised Meyer and his young Gators in Columbia with a victory. He couldn't do it in his homecoming to The Swamp, could he? Well, he didn't...but he almost did. With :08 left in regulation and a one point deficit, South Carolina lined up for a field goal that would take away Florida's birth in the eventual National Championship match-up with Ohio State. However, Jarvis Moss blocked the his second kick in the game to give the Gators the victory. Rusty Thompson is one of the Founders of GatorTailgating.com READ SIMILAR STORIES |

All great plays, but I agree
All great plays, but I agree with your order. That Jarvis Moss play is ingrained in my memory forever. I was in that endzone when he kicked it and everyone just lost it. Maybe the loudest I have ever heard the swamp.
