The Most Important Gator

Mickey Marrotti coaches

When you first read the title of this article, you immediately thought of Tim Tebow. If not, it was Urban Meyer, the new Offensive Coordinator Steve Addazio, Charlie Strong, Brandon Spikes, or possibly even incoming freshman Andre Debose. All of those would be incorrect though. The most important Gator this summer is none other than Mickey Marotti, the strength and conditioning coordinator.

With the Gators coming off of an outstanding National Championship season and returning 11 starters on defense and the Heisman-winning Senior Quarterback on offense, they have one thing to fear: Complacency.

"Do I worry about complacency? Sure I do," Meyer told the St. Petersburg Times. "That's why we're going to have the toughest offseason we've ever had."

It won't be easy though. There are 4 different magazines predicting they'll be the eventual National Champions, and they will probably top both polls to kickoff the season against Charleston Southern. Every media outlet in America that interviews them is asking them about making it to Pasadena, and they haven't even played a down of football yet.

That's why Mickey Marotti is the most important Gator this offseason. With Meyer having limited access to the team during the summer workouts, Mickey will be his eyes and ears. It will be Mickey's job to keep them focused and not worried about the hype of possibly reaching Pasadena, but instead zoned in on the first game of the season.

Not only will he need to keep them focused, but he will need to keep them so worn out that they have no energy for getting into trouble. Obviously, Florida has had an issue with this in the past couple years as referenced by dozens of media outlets over the past couple weeks. The more run-ins with the law the Gators have, the less likely their back-to-back BCS Championship hopes will be.

"I think it's all about accountability," commented Marotti. "The easy thing to do is, 'We've won. We've got all these guys coming back. We're going to be good.' No, you train this team different than last year's team; different than you trained the 2007 team. They're all different, with different dynamics. You're trying to find out what those dynamics are."

As long as Mickey keeps them so worn out that there's minimal interest in nightlife and partying, this Gator team will have very few run-ins with the law. It's not like the coaches don't have a picture perfect story to tell them what can happen to their upcoming season if they don't stay focused and out of trouble.

Last year's pre-season #1 pick, the Georgia Bulldogs, are the opposite of ideal example for the Gators. Instead of staying focused and out of trouble, Georgia's offseason was laced with arrests and problems which led them to the Capital One Bowl rather than the BCS Championship they had hoped for.

The 2009 Gators do not want to be the 2008 Georgia Bulldogs, and the answer to that not happening is one man: Mickey Marotti.
