Position Overview: Quaterbacks - Tebow, Brantley, Reed, and Haden?

2009 Florida Gator Quarterbacks

The Quarterback position is one that doesn’t need too much breakdown due to the returning of Tim Tebow. Yet, there are still some interesting storylines and developments nonetheless.

The former Heisman trophy winner, missionary, preacher, leader, and epic promise keeper; Tim Tebow is primed to have another championship season. He has become even more of a legend by winning his third national title in four years and may even add a second Heisman in the process. New QB coach Scot Loeffler has tweaked Timmy’s throwing motion so that it isn’t quite as far to the side. This has made him more of an effective passer and caused him less soreness in his shoulder after throwing.

Tebow may also be taking more snaps from under center instead of out of the shotgun. Some have claimed this is to prepare him for the NFL, but I can assure you Meyer could care less about the NFL. If it doesn’t help the Gators win in 2009, he isn’t going to implement it.

Another Gator QB that has gotten a lot of publicity lately has been redshirt sophomore John Brantley. He has been the hot topic in the media ever since Urban Meyer said he will play a role in significant parts of big games, similar to the role Tebow played in 2006. Many in the media don’t seem to believe Coach Meyer even though they know Brantley would start for all but about 4 or 5 teams in the entire country. Brantley was the national high school player of the year in his senior year for a reason. He has developed wonderfully by all accounts and once Tebow is gone, he will be the next great Gator QB following in the steps of Spurrier, Matthews, Wuerffel, Grossman, Leak, and Tebow.

The third string QB is freshman Jordan Reed from Connecticut. Many have written off Reed in favor of Trey Burton who will come in next year, but don’t overlook Reed’s potential in the future. He is a big, strong, athletic QB who can chuck the ball a mile. Reed has supposedly looked a little off so far in preseason camp, but I expect him to be fine once he picks up all the things that Coach Addazio and the offensive staff are throwing at him.

Junior CB Joe Haden was a QB in high school and has been working on some basic skills at the position after practices with the coaching staff. All indications are that he may see a few snaps at QB in some unique plays. Haden is a heck of an athlete and it will be fun to see him with the ball in his hands more. He looks to take the place of Percy’s direct snap, but will also be a threat throwing the ball to surprise the opposing defenses too.

The only other QB on the roster is redshirt Junior Andrew Blaylock from Durham, NC who has never seen a snap at QB.
