Help with the Florida experience - Posted Sat, 08/09/2008 - 10:40pm

A few buddies of mine and myself go on a tour each year.  We have done Notre dame, A & M and Tennessee already, and this year have chosen Florida.  We would appreciate any help in terms of the "Must Do" stuff while we are there for the Hawaii weekend. We will be arriving midday Thursday and in town until sunday.  I loved this website for restaurants and bars, but would love any other help with tour guide such as:  1. Any special traditions to take part in?  2. Night before game activities?  3.  Game day activities?  4. Best place for out of towners to tailgate?

Thanks in advance for any help you may contribute. Go Gators!!! (at least for this year!!)

I'm glad you found this page. Welcome to Gator Country and the Gator Nation (at least for this year)!

1 - The Gator Walk is something you probably won't want to miss. It's about 3 hours before kickoff at the corner of University Ave and North-South Dr (Gale Lemerand). You won't want to miss the Gators entrance video and running onto the field. It's pretty exciting and will be really loud for the first game of the season, even though it's a 12:30 kickoff, which sucks.

2 - Bar hopping is about it for Friday night. If you like clubs, go downtown to Market Street (80's night), Fat Tuesdays, and other clubs. If you like bars, go to midtown (right across street from Stadium on University Ave) and there is Swamp, The Grog house, and tons of other little bars and clubs.

3 - Tailgate. With a 12:30 kickoff, you'll want to start tailgating early. If you'd like and are up to it, you can come camp out, bar hop, and tailgate with us before the game. As discussed in another thread, we kick off every season with a campout the night before the first game. We'll actually camp out where we tailgate at and just sleep for a couple hours between bar-hopping and tailgating. After the game, since it is so early, most people will continue to tailgate. You can also watch the rest of the games at one of the hundred sports bars around town.

4. Wherever you can find a spot. The earlier you come, the better. Obviously, Im pretty partial to tailgating with us.....but if you;d rather tailgate alone, I suggest starting to look for spots at about 7 or 8am for a 12:30 kickoff. If you start looking at 9 or 10, you wont be parked till 10:30 or 11 and you wont even have time to set up before kickoff....plus, you'll miss the Gator Walk.

Hope that helps!

OK, I'm new to the site, but I feel I have to throw in my two cents.

1. Gator Walk is always two hours before kickoff.  If you start lining up at 10:15, you'll get a good spot.  It's not terribly exciting and is quite short, but it's good to go to if you're only going to one game.  Tip is to position yourself on University right next to the police officers - they set up a temporary blockade and if you're right next to one of them you'll be right in the front and will be able to see all of the players very easily.

2. University avenue right by the stadium ups their prices significantly on gamedays.  One exception is the Beer Pit, which is on the bottom floor of Gator Plaza on University and 18th street.  They have ridiculously low prices for good beer (sweetwater 420, blue moon, etc for no more than $7 a pitcher).  Best part is that there won't be a huge number of people there, so if you have a group you can essentially take the place over.

3. Best tailgating on University Ave is right across from Chipotle.  This is the first allowable "open" tailgating spot, so there is a good mix of students and mostly recent graduates (like myself).  Lots of Baggo boards and good food and good beer in the area.

A couple of addenda to my previous post:

-When I said "open" tailgating, I meant this is a spot that anyone can set up shop.  In recent years the University police have not allowed people to tailgate on University closer to the stadium than the area I described, since they have recently earmarked the area for boosters and season ticket holders.

-Night before the game, most places along University are good.  There are two main bar areas in Gainesville - right near the stadium along University, then in the downtown area (about two miles directly east of the stadium).  Market street is good, but I would encourage you to go to Durty Nelly's if Market Street is too crowded.  On University I would highly recommend going to the Salty Dog the night before.  Yuengling pitchers should still be no more than $5.  Gator City (also right on University) is a lot of fun.  I'm not sure how old you are, but I wouldn't recommend going to Gator City if you're over 30.

-Traditions.  There aren't a lot of university-wide pre-game traditions.  Something cool that's low key that you could do on Friday late afternoon is to go to the bat house on campus.  I would encourage you to spend time walking around campus on Friday if you have time, UF's campus is beautiful (especially compared to Notre Dame).

We are definetly in the old balls club as I am 30 but my 2 buddies are pushing 40.   We usually spend thursday trying to acquaint ourselves with the university, which means we walk around and pull on doors to find the best places.  As coaches we tend to gravitate towards our respective sports so the baseball field and track are always big places to go.  We will probably do one of the bar areas on thursday night and one of them on friday night.  Thanks for your help and expertise.

Rusty-

First off thanks for the response and great info.  I take it there is not a pep rally before games? There was at ND and A & M but not at Tennessee or any of the pac-10 schools.

In terms of your guys tailgate 2 questions:

1. Where exactly are you guys located (or do you have a specific spot?)

2. How does it work. Do you guys charge when people show up or does everyone just chip in or what. We don't want to be those out of town free loaders by any means. Just a couple guys looking to spread our cheer and talk college football.

Thanks again,

Jeff

1. Coming from I-75, take Archer Rd down to Gale Lemerand (Formerly North-South Drive) and turn left at that light. Then, go down through one red light and there is a parking garage on the left just befroe Museum Rd. We tailgate directly in front of that parking garage. You can also find our spot by going to the "Tailgating Locations" here on the site. Just zoom in on North South Drive and you can't miss my user name, and a couple others that are posted in the same spot too. It's probably 3 blocks from the south end of the stadium, so it's not a bad walk either...

2. We don't charge when people show up, so we just ask for donations. We'll probably have some type of jar or cup out for donations on the table. You also can buy t-shirts and coozies to help too. We aren't big fans of freeloaders, but we have our share of them. I think every tailgating group has a freeloader or two around. :)

Looking forward to tailgating with you guys!

Hey Coach,

Just thought I'd let you and your boys know that G-ville has some strict open container laws! So be careful, they even arrested Joakim Noah for having a beer in a cup! Nazis!

I am in a similar boat to the gentleman who posted the original message.  I am coming from out of town to watch the Florida-Ole Miss game next week.  However, I am a former Florida student who was born  and currently resides in New york.  After years of telling my fiends how terricfic SEC football is, I am finally binging 5 of them down to Gainesville for the game.

Needless to say, I want to show them the best time possible, and hope they experince all that the Gator gameday atmosphere has to offer.  We are staying in a hotel a mile and a half fro campus, and we will have a car.

If i remember corectly, we can drive onto campus before 9 and get a spot anywhere on camus to tailgate.  i trust that you can still drink on these locations.  Please tell me if I am wrong.

Also, i would like them to et a taste of real Southern tailgating, and was hoping one of you guys could point me in the right diretion.  Is there a certain one of your tailgates we should visit?  If so, where are you located?  And finally, just so ou don't think we are a bunch of free-loading carpet-baggers, what can we bring to the party?  Booze?  food?  Money donation?  Please let me know a soon as you can.  Thanks.  i love your website.
