Gators Continue Their Winning Ways with Uninspiring Performance

Jeff Demps

The Gators rolled on to their 19th win in a row and go to 9-0 on the season as they defeated Vanderbilt last night by a score of 27-3. Unfortunately, the spark that was started in Jacksonville last week where the offensive woes seemed to be repaired doesn't seem to have fully caught fire yet. The Gators offense looked unimpressive against the overwhelmed Commodores and seemed to sputter most of the night.

With big play recievers Percy Harvin and Louis Murphy watching the game from the sideline, they only served as a reminder to Gator fans what this offense lost after the 2008 season. The offense that seemed so unstoppable in the second half of 2008 has sputtered through five of their seven SEC games in 2009 with a lack of big plays, red-zone production, and good play-calling.

Don't worry. The sky isn't falling and there is no reason to worry just yet, but concern is building slowly in Gainesville. With each passing game, the Gators are waiting on that game where they break out of this lackluster offense and start dominating teams like they have the ability to. The Gators have the defense to win championships and the playmakers to make for a great offense, but they haven't gotten the formula together just right yet.

"You'd like to put the ball in the end zone more and not kick field goals, but we're going to be happy being 9-0. Not too many teams in the country are 9-0," said quarterback Tim Tebow.

Tebow was 15 of 20 for 208 passing yards, but a lot of them came in one chunk on a pass play to Aarron Hernandez in the fourth quarter in which he gained 64 yards on a beautiful catch and run. On a positive note, the Gators didn't turn the ball over one time like they had trouble with against Arkansas and Mississippi State.

The Gators now begin prepping for the Ol' Ball Coach and his Gamecocks as they travel to Columbia, South Carolina for a game that has the potential to be a tough one. With a rowdy fan base like USC's, you can count on Williams-Brice Stadium to be rocking Saturday afternoon. In addition to that, Spurrier always saves his best for his alma mater and won't be holding anything back next Saturday.
