The Florida Gators should have one of the best and most well rounded special teams units in the country in 2008, with the only question mark at the kicker position. Return specialist Brandon James will be a nightmare for opposing teams and punter Chaz Henry has one of the strongest legs in the nation.
True freshman Caleb Sturgis is expected to be a great kicker for Florida, but looked shaky during spring practice.
The return game for the Gators should once again be lethal in 2008, behind speedster Brandon James. James made a living running back punts and kickoffs last year and he should show more of the same ability this year.
He is one of the most exciting return men in the country, along with Trindon Holliday and has perhaps the best vision of any return man in the SEC. James is almost a lock to take at least one back for a touchdown in 2008.
At punter for the Gators, Chaz Henry enters the season firmly entrenched as the starter. Henry’s leg strength seems to have improved significantly in the past year, a remarkable thing given how strong he was in high school.
Henry routinely punted the ball seventy yards or more during spring practice for the Gators and should be one of the best punters in the SEC if he figures out his accuracy and can become more consistent.
He had one or two shanks last year that put the Gators in a bad position, particularly late in the game against Auburn. If he can improve in those areas he will certainly be one of the best punters in the nation in 2008.
At kicker, most Gator fans assume that highly touted true freshman Caleb Sturgis will win the job. Sturgis has excellent range but seems to struggle with his accuracy from anything beyond forty yards.
It would not be surprising at all to see Coach Urban Meyer go with senior Jonathan Phillips as the place kicker and use Sturgis only for kickoffs.
For now, the two are battling for the starting spot in fall practice.
Overall, the special teams unit should be great for the Gators and everyone should expect a Meyer-coached team to have great coverage units.
