Gene Chizik? Is that the best Auburn could do? If you are going to get rid of a proven commodity, please make sure you find somebody better than Gene Chizik. Please find somebody better than 5-19 in his college coaching career. Please find a coach that won more than two conference games in two seasons, losing nine in a row before bolting.

Was Turner Gill too black? Was Will Muschamp too expensive? Was Mike Leach too crazy? Either way you turn, none of this makes a lot of sense.

If you are Auburn, pay Will Muschamp top dollar to come back. Let me instill some attitude into your program, and if you are Texas pay him more to come back when Mack Brown retires.

If you are an Auburn fan, how can you justify letting Tommy Tuberville go with these developments? Auburn would have been better off hiring Phillip Fulmer or Sylvester Croom.

Oh, wait. This makes sense. It just hit me.

Chizik just fired nearly his entire staff at Iowa State, and stabbed the Cyclones in the back by leaving. He didn’t replace the ones he fired. Seems sort of Auburn, doesn’t it?

This is Auburn. The Auburn that allowed Tuberville’s staff to go on the road to recruit before canning the boss. The ultimate back-stabbing move of the century.

“Son, come to Auburn. Wait, what? Well, hell. Looks like I won’t have a job when I return, but come to Auburn anyway.”

If you are one of the remaining few left at Iowa State recruiting, what do you say?

“Well, umm...Uh…Son, I have no idea what offense we will run. I have no idea what defense we will run. How will you fit in our program? Nobody else is recruiting you. We might be better than Northern Iowa next year. Well, no we won’t. But…yeah.”

Turner Gill made the most sense. But, you know. Yeah, the race card. Maybe the state of Alabama isn’t ready for it yet. You would have to think we would have an African-American President before the state of Alabama would hire an African-American head coach. It’s okay. It happens.

Gill could very well be on his way closer to “home” at Iowa State. That would be uncomfortable for Nebraska fans. For 364 days a year, Gill is a Husker legend. He changed the way the position of quarterback was played at Nebraska. But for one day, dang it, Turner, the Huskers will have to take you down.

Why not Mike Leach? Don't look now, but Leach changed the way offense is played in the Big 12. When Leach took over as the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma, nobody ran what Leach brought to the table.

And look at the Big 12 now? Find an offense in the Big 12 that isn't similar to Texas Tech's. And look at the results of the Big 12. The Big 12 is the best conference in college football, but you get the coach of the worst team in the Big 12 at Auburn? Figure that one out.

Alabama fans are busy celebrating. Either that, or laughing hysterically. “You mean to tell me that a coach that beat us six out of seven times wasn’t good enough? And you want to bring in a coach that won five games in two years with no signs of improvement for 2009?”

Maybe the race card was unfair. Maybe Chizik will right the ship 11 times a year before losing to Alabama and Nick Saban every year. Or, maybe he has the same results two years after he took over when it’s time to bring in his own players.

At any rate, it makes zero sense. Auburn will be ranked third in Alabama next season behind the Crimson Tide and Troy. And Alabama-Birmingham is a pick ‘em. If he does succeed, give it time to fail.

After all, that’s the Auburn way. Failure. Just like this terrible choice.
